Prospective Students

Undergraduate Students

There are various employment and research opportunities for undergraduate students interested in all things plants, from ecophysiology and stable isotopes to evolutionary ecology and ecosystem restoration. I am able to supervise summer research students and Honours Research students through the Biology Department.

Summer employment: I typically hire summer students in the late winter/early spring. Plant Ecology Research Assistants can be part-time or full-time positions, and involve assisting graduate students & other research group members with lab and/or field work. Interested students are encouraged to send an e-mail to Dr. Ellie Goud with a brief description of your experience (including relevant coursework) and scientific interests. Including a resume or CV is strongly encouraged.

Honours research: I typically accept 1 Honours research student a year. Ideal candidates have a strong interest in plants, an enthusiasm for independent ecological research, and high academic standing. Interested students should send the following application materials by end of February/first week of March: (1) Letter of interest summarizing your experience, (2) Curriculum vitae/Resume, (3) University transcripts (unofficial are OK), (4) A writing sample (manuscript, term paper), (5) Contact information for 1 reference. You are also welcome to contact Dr. Goud before applying to discuss your interests and potential opportunities.

Are you an international student looking for a Canadian internship? Check out Mitacs Globalink Research Internship – a 12 week research internship from May – October for international undergraduates from the following countries and regions: Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Taiwan, Tunisia, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the United States.

MSc and PhD Students

I supervise graduate students through the MSc & PhD in Applied Science at Saint Mary’s. Students are supported through stipends, teaching and research assistantships.

I usually accept 1–2 graduate students per year, with applications typically being considered in early December – January in time for the February registration deadline. I encourage students to pursue their own research interests and projects that fall within the conceptual framework of the lab. If you are interested in applying, I suggest you look through our web page and read some of the papers we have published. Then, please send an e-mail to Dr. Ellie Goud with (1) Letter of interest for the position summarizing your experience and why you would like to join our group, (2) Curriculum vitae, (3) University transcripts (unofficial are OK), (4) A writing sample (manuscript, thesis, term paper), (5) Contact information for 1 or 2 references.
